Eric Gill Series by Monotype

Posted by Simon

Good news for all typeface fanatics, Monotype has updated two of Eric Gill’s most famous typefaces, Gill Sans and Joanna, to create the new Eric Gill Series featuring more than 75 fonts in three families.

To celebrate these new releases, an exhibition is running until the 10th of November at London’s Truman Brewery. The exhibition showcases archive material tracing the development of the typefaces, and features hand-drawings from Gill as well as copper-plates from the letterpress.

Visitors can ‘set’ super-sized glyphs of Gill typeface onto a magnetic wall and see the digital installation aiming to “show type as an emotive and adaptive means of communication”.

The popularity of Gill Sans led to the creation of many display styles, shown below with Gill’s notes and alterations.
